When the second half was about to start, both teams quickly lined up and Alfred Stone made a kick off. Jon Venables's shot was meant for the net just under the crossbar, but Stan Smythe read the situation well and was quickly in position to make a wonderful save in the 55th minute of play. In the 58th minute Ray Denham shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Stan Smythe saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. Stan Smythe showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Ray Denham, who was totally free with the ball in the 63rd minute.
