But the shot missed the goal by a fraction of an inch, and the fans sat back down disappointed that Alec Milburn couldn't finish the play. In the 7th minute, Ivor Garrett hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. Through an outstanding action, after 15 minutes, Dave Wellings successfully got his hands on the ball before it slid into the goal at the right post. With a little luck, Southall City's Dave Wellings got control of the ball when Alec Milburn tried to sneak it across the goal line. In the 20th match minute, Southall City was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Bobby Watts to maneuver through the defense. Alec Milburn fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 21st minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Dave Wellings having to interfere. Dave Wellings showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Andy Holt, who was totally free with the ball in the 23rd minute. Alec Milburn who was well placed in front of the goal fired away a dangerous shot that in the 24thth minute tested the skills of Dave Wellings when he managed to save the team from getting behind. Dave Wellings made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Andy Holt in the 26th minute of play. Dave Wellings took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Andy Holt, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. After 29 minutes of play, Shrewsbury AFC's Brian Galway made it 1-0 when he simply outclassed the defender marking him and hit a curling shot into the right side of the net. Dave Wellings was left in no man's land by his defense there! Dave Wellings made an important save on a dangerous shot by Andy Holt in the 33rd minute. Alec Milburn scored 2-0 in the 40th match minute with a shot that went into the goal to the right of Dave Wellings, who was just a little too slow in reacting to the shot. Dave Wellings showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Andy Holt in the 45th minute of the match. After 48 minutes of play, Shrewsbury AFC's Andy Holt made it 3-0 when he simply outclassed the defender marking him and hit a curling shot into the right side of the net. Dave Wellings was left in no man's land by his defense there!

When the second half was about to start, both teams quickly lined up and Brian Warner made a kick off. In the 54th minute when Richie Wheeler was dribbling his way through Shrewsbury AFC's defense he got a clear chance for a shot, but the shot went just outside the left post. Andy Holt sent away a hard shot on goal in the 59th minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. After 61 minutes of play, Shrewsbury AFC's Brian Galway made it 4-0 when he simply outclassed the defender marking him and hit a curling shot into the right side of the net. Dave Wellings was left in no man's land by his defense there! Dave Wellings made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Andy Holt in the 66th minute of play. Andy Holt fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 68th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Dave Wellings having to interfere. Andy Holt's shot was meant for the net just under the crossbar, but Dave Wellings read the situation well and was quickly in position to make a wonderful save in the 73rd minute of play. In the 77thth minute of the game Andy Holt who was perfectly placed tried to make a shot on goal, but Southall City's Dave Wellings was lucky and managed to grab hold of the ball. Southall City's Dave Wellings played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Andy Holt in the 81st minute of play. After some fancy dribbling in the 82nd minute, Andy Holt managed to get in a good position for a shot. Shrewsbury AFC's supporters rose to their feet, but Andy Holt was a bit off balance and shot the ball just wide of the left post. Dave Wellings breathed a sigh of relief and went to take the goal kick. An unexpectedly hard shot by Andy Holt in the 91st minute of play forced Southall City's goalkeeper Dave Wellings to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. If Alec Milburn had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 96th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. After a defensive mix-up in Southall City's zone, Alec Milburn stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat. Dave Wellings came out of the goal and Alec Milburn tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play.
