The crowd had been anticipating this game for weeks and the excitement in the stadium was easily visible. If Les Lane had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 3rd minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. In the 10th minute, Dennis Robins ran past the defenders and hit a shot which went straight ahead into goal. Dan Nash was frozen by the shot and now it was 2-0. Doncaster Rovers's Dan Nash played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Mark Burns in the 17th minute of play. In the 21st match minute, Doncaster Rovers was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Lennie Kalischer to maneuver through the defense. In the 25thth minute of the game Antony Fairfax who was perfectly placed tried to make a shot on goal, but Ipswich's Pete Hehir was lucky and managed to grab hold of the ball. Antony Fairfax fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 28th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Pete Hehir having to interfere. 32 minutes into the game, Wayne Bensley cracked a shot to the right of the goalkeeper, 2-1. Pete Hehir was not in position, and could only watch the ball fly in. The referee was alert and spotted a serious foul by Casey Theobald during the 39th minute. The player immediately received a yellow card. Casey Theobald hit a great freekick 39 minutes into the match. Wayne Bensley sent away a hard shot on goal in the 40th minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. 42 minutes into the match, Ipswich's goal looked a bit too open when Wayne Bensley came free, but Pete Hehir reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. After 47 played minutes Doncaster Rovers got a freekick which was hit by William Hunter. The home fans were very happy to see their team leading 2-1 at half-time.

After some fancy dribbling in the 55th minute, Martin Bayford managed to get in a good position for a shot. Doncaster Rovers's supporters rose to their feet, but Martin Bayford was a bit off balance and shot the ball just wide of the left post. Pete Hehir breathed a sigh of relief and went to take the goal kick. In the 57th minute, Dennis Robins hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. Pete Hehir made an important save on a dangerous shot by Wayne Bensley in the 58th minute. In the 60th minute of the match Crispin Coulthard shot from a long distance. The ball could have gone into the goal to the right of the goalkeeper, but Dan Nash showed his good shape when he easily got hold of the ball. A collision led to Doncaster Rovers getting a freekick after 63 minutes play. Rodney Holmes hit a great ball. William Hunter kicked well hit freekick during the 65th minute of the match. Wayne Bensley could have scored with his fast shot on goal in the 72nd minute of the match, but Pete Hehir made a huge save. 76 minutes into the match, Doncaster Rovers's goal looked a bit too open when Mark Burns came free, but Dan Nash reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. Martin Bayford sent away a hard shot on goal in the 78th minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. Zak Bedford scored 3-1 in the 85th match minute with a shot that went into the goal to the right of Dan Nash, who was just a little too slow in reacting to the shot. After 92 played minutes Ipswich got a freekick which was hit by Chesney Kaye. Dan Nash showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Mark Burns, who was totally free with the ball in the 95th minute. An unexpectedly hard shot by Mark Burns in the 98th minute of play forced Doncaster Rovers's goalkeeper Dan Nash to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball.
