After 3 played minutes Southwell got a freekick which was hit by Tyler Higgins. In the 7th match minute, Man City was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Lawrence Piercy to maneuver through the defense. Ed Midson was in the perfect position, and the defense had done a good job marking him, but Henry Wing showcased his skills and made a perfect shot to score 1-0 in the 10 minute of play. Stan Marriott sent away a hard shot on goal in the 15th minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. When Stan Marriott came up free with the goalie in the 17th minute, the Man City fans jumped to their feet. But the shot missed the goal by a fraction of an inch, and the fans sat back down disappointed that Stan Marriott couldn't finish the play. In the 19th minute, Gaz Bowen made a precise shot to the right of Derek Turner. Southwell's defense was at fault, and the scoreboard reflected the new score, 1-1. Derek Turner showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Gaz Bowen in the 21st minute of the match. If Gaz Bowen had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 23rd minute. The ball went over the crossbar instead. Derek Turner didn't have a chance when a screaming shot from Stan Marriott went, in the 25th minute, to the upper right corner, 1-2 was the resulting score. Stan Marriott scored 1-3 in the 28th match minute with a shot that went into the goal to the right of Derek Turner, who was just a little too slow in reacting to the shot. Lawrence Piercy charged in rather forcefully in the 31st minute of the match, and managed to knock his opponent down. The referee showed Lawrence Piercy the yellow card, and asked the players to shake hands before continuing play. The supporters of Southwell booed when Man City was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 31 match minutes in a wonderful position. Lawrence Piercy didn't get a good kick on the ball. Paul Paley hit a great freekick 32 minutes into the match. Lawrence Piercy sent away a hard shot on goal in the 35th minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. In the 36th minute Gaz Bowen shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Derek Turner saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. An unexpectedly hard shot by Gaz Bowen in the 41st minute of play forced Southwell's goalkeeper Derek Turner to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. When Larry Forrester came up free with the goalie in the 42nd minute, the Man City fans jumped to their feet. The crowd was extremely unhappy with the home team's performance in the first half. They were losing 1-4.

If Stan Marriott had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 54th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. When the match had gone on for 55 minutes, Gaz Bowen put it in 1-5 from a short distance just to the right of Derek Turner. Southwell's Derek Turner proved his good apprehension of play when he, in the 60th minute of the match, managed to save Southwell from getting a goal against them. After 64 minutes, Tyler Higgins mouthed his way into the referee's book. The tension between the Southwell and the Man City players grew even worse after the yellow card. Derek Turner made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Larry Forrester in the 66th minute of play. 67 minutes into the match, Southwell's goal looked a bit too open when Stan Marriott came free, but Derek Turner reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. Gaz Bowen's late challenge caught a Southwell's player on the shin and left him crawling around in pain. The referee blew his whistle and produced the yellow card. Gaz Bowen helped the player get up and apologised. In the 70th match minute, Man City was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Gaz Bowen to maneuver through the defense. Stan Marriott received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 73rd minute. Derek Turner tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. A collision led to Southwell getting a freekick after 75 minutes play. Tim Fowler hit a great ball. In the 76th minute, Gaz Bowen ran past the defenders and hit a shot which went straight ahead into goal. Derek Turner was frozen by the shot and now it was 1-6. After a defensive mix-up in Southwell's zone, Lawrence Piercy stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat. Derek Turner came out of the goal and Lawrence Piercy tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. 83 minutes into the match, Southwell's goal looked a bit too open when Lawrence Piercy came free, but Derek Turner reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. In the 85th minute, Tim Fowler hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. When Man City's Stan Marriott in the 86th minute got a chance for a shot 86th didn't hesitate and placed the ball to the right of the goalie. A beautiful save bye Southwell's goalie prevented a goal. An unexpectedly hard shot by Stan Marriott in the 88th minute of play forced Southwell's goalkeeper Derek Turner to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. Gaz Bowen sent away a hard shot on goal in the 89th minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. Man City's Ed Midson played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Henry Wing in the 95th minute of play. When the match was over Man City could go home with a victory in their luggage, having controlled the game far better than Southwell throughout the match.
