Feliks Szotek fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 41st minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Zenon Kochniarczyk having to interfere. Cupel's Marek Piczak took a good shot, in the 45th minute, which hit the crossbar above Radomir Niemojewski's head, and flew over the goal. Lechia Gdańsk's manager was very thankful on the sidelines as his team had managed to keep the ball out of the net after some serious pressure by Cupel. Cupel's Napoleon Dresik got a good chance for a goal in the 47th minute, but he totally mistimed the shot and it went over the crossbar. After the first half Cupel were leading 0-1. They had played with great self confidence throughout the first half and fully deserved their lead.
