An unexpectedly hard shot by Lenny Mabbutt in the 13th minute of play forced Chelsea's goalkeeper Wally Avery to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. Chelsea's Pierce Shackleton got a good chance for a goal in the 17th minute, but he totally mistimed the shot and it went over the crossbar. Wally Avery showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Will Westwood, who was totally free with the ball in the 19th minute. If Lenny Mabbutt had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 21st minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. The referee was alert and spotted a serious foul by Franz Slater during the 94th minute. The player immediately received a yellow card. Franz Slater hit a great freekick 94 minutes into the match. Chelsea's fans were exulted and cheered after their team won in a match that could easily have gone the other way.
