One of Budleigh Salterton:s players had nearly got his shirt torn off by an opponent while getting free in front of Yeovil FC:s goal. In the 30th minute there was a penalty for Yeovil FC. Callum Marsden stepped forward and shot the ball to the right of a diving Alan Simms. 1-0. 34 minutes into the match, Budleigh Salterton's goal looked a bit too open when Mike Hayes came free, but Alan Simms reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. A collision led to Budleigh Salterton getting a freekick after 36 minutes play. Stu Spink hit a great ball. 37 minutes into the match, Yeovil FC's Callum Marsden broke free and took a long shot that unfortunately flew wide. A fine initiative that could have resulted in a goal. Aaron Philpott fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 40th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Garry Philpott having to interfere. Alan Simms showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Mike Hayes, who was totally free with the ball in the 43rd minute. All the noise was coming from the home fans when the whistle went for half-time. The home team had fought hardest to put themselves in a deserved lead.

After a defensive mix-up in Budleigh Salterton's zone, Nicholas Bradfield stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat. Alan Simms came out of the goal and Nicholas Bradfield tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. When Aaron Philpott came up free with the goalie in the 63rd minute, the Budleigh Salterton fans jumped to their feet. But the shot missed the goal by a fraction of an inch, and the fans sat back down disappointed that Aaron Philpott couldn't finish the play. Mike Hayes sent away a hard shot on goal in the 73rd minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. After some fancy dribbling in the 75th minute, Mike Hayes managed to get in a good position for a shot. Yeovil FC's supporters rose to their feet, but Mike Hayes was a bit off balance and shot the ball just wide of the left post. Alan Simms breathed a sigh of relief and went to take the goal kick.
