Independiente's manager could be seen yelling to the referee that Veniamin Dudyrev was offside, but the referee ignored the protest. 0-2. With 16 minutes on the clock, Andrey Kornitskiy commited a dangerous tackle. The referee had no choice but to show him the red card. When the match had been going on for 17 minutes, Independiente's Igor Orlov got an opportunity to shoot a penalty. The audience thought a goal was coming when Veniamin Dudyrev got free with Aleksey Belousov in the 66th minute, but the goalkeeper managed to catch the ball with a huge effort. Stanford le Hope may have spent more time on the ball, but Independiente were more willing to take their chances and they walked away with the win.
