Colombia were awarded a corner in the 19th minute after Brazil's defender lost control of the ball, allowing it to roll out over the line. Roy Keane took the corner. Roy Keane made a great header on Colombia's corner, it was just that Brazil's Alysson Rezende managed to reach the ball for a save. Rene Higuita showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Luís Eduardo Marinho, who was totally free with the ball in the 21st minute. Alysson Rezende made an important save on a dangerous shot by Sansone Poso in the 25th minute. A very good chance. 31 minutes into the match, Colombia's goal looked a bit too open when Morales Moreira came free, but Rene Higuita reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. The audience thought a goal was coming when Sansone Poso got free with Alysson Rezende in the 45th minute, but the goalkeeper managed to catch the ball with a huge effort. 47 minutes into the match, Maurinho Mendonça had an open shot that he just couldn't miss and scored to the right of Rene Higuita. Colombia's manager could be seen yelling to the referee that Maurinho Mendonça was offside, but the referee ignored the protest. 0-1. The Colombia players were disheartened as they walked off the pitch after the first half. Brazil were winning 0-1.

The hometeam waved at the audience when it was time for Morales Moreira to strike the kick off in the second half. In the 53rd minute the ball was on its way in behind Colombia's goalkeeper Rene Higuita, but with the help of a sacrificing defense, he could catch the ball at the crossbar. After 57 minutes of play, the referee blew the whistle. It was a penalty for Brazil! Alysson Rezende went to the wrong direction when Rafael Jauregui was taking care of the penalty kick which however missed the goal. Alysson Rezende took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Sansone Poso, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. In the 64th minute, Sansone Poso ran past the defenders and hit a shot which went straight ahead into goal. Alysson Rezende was frozen by the shot and now it was 1-1. Colombia's Mario Alberto Yepes was substituted for Elpidio Banda. Colombia made a substitution. Jose-Antonio Capon replaced Rafael Jauregui. After a rather tough play, Colombia's Roy Keane got a free kick in the 68th minute. Brazil made a substitution. Denílson Tepedino replaced Morales Moreira. Brazil made a substitution. But to his dismay, Sansone Poso quickly shot the ball in between his legs and into the goal making it 2-1. The supporters of Brazil booed when Colombia was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 78 match minutes in a wonderful position. Kelemen Astonzas didn't get a good kick on the ball. After some careless play in the Colombia defense, Clayton Gol kicked a shot that curved into the net to the right of Rene Higuita. The Colombia fans voiced their displeasure as they felt that Rene Higuita should have stopped the shot. Alysson Rezende took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Jose-Antonio Capon, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. After some fancy dribbling in the 84th minute, Roy Keane managed to get in a good position for a shot. Colombia's supporters rose to their feet, but Roy Keane was a bit off balance and shot the ball just wide of the left post. Alysson Rezende breathed a sigh of relief and went to take the goal kick. Clayton Gol could have scored with his fast shot on goal in the 86th minute of the match, but Rene Higuita made a huge save. Alysson Rezende stood for a superb save when he managed to get hold of Zaquiel Puredo's shot from short distance in the 89th minute. 90 minutes into the match, Jose-Antonio Capon had an open shot that he just couldn't miss and scored to the right of Alysson Rezende. Brazil's manager could be seen yelling to the referee that Jose-Antonio Capon was offside, but the referee ignored the protest. 3-2. The audience was convinced that Denílson Tepedino's extremely hard shot when he got free in front of the goal was going in, but Rene Higuita was relentless in the 96th minute of the game. In the 97th minute Brazil were awarded a corner. Alberto Moraes went to the cornerflag to take it. In the 98th minute Denílson Tepedino shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Rene Higuita saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. In the 100th minute of the match Brazil got a corner. Colombia's goalie ran out to the linesman to protest the call, but the linesman resolutely pointed his flag at the cornerflag. Alberto Moraes ran over to the corner to take the kick. The crowd rose to their feet and cheered when the referee blew the final whistle. Colombia had won after a very even match.
