Roris Taramona made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Patricio Camps in the 14th minute of play. Hector Dragana sent away a hard shot on goal in the 16th minute, but the ball hit the crossbar and went out. A very good chance for a goal. Hector Dragana's shot was meant for the net just under the crossbar, but Nery Pumpido read the situation well and was quickly in position to make a wonderful save in the 17th minute of play. Nery Pumpido took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Hector Dragana, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. When Hector Dragana came up free with the goalie in the 20th minute, the U21 Ecuador fans jumped to their feet. But the shot missed the goal by a fraction of an inch, and the fans sat back down disappointed that Hector Dragana couldn't finish the play. An unexpectedly hard shot by Hector Dragana in the 26th minute of play forced U21 Guatemala's goalkeeper Nery Pumpido to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. Hector Dragana sent away a hard shot on goal in the 27th minute, but the ball hit the crossbar and went out. A very good chance for a goal. After a defensive mix-up in U21 Guatemala's zone, Hector Dragana stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat. Nery Pumpido came out of the goal and Hector Dragana tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. The away team players looked dejected as the walked off the pitch at half time. They had fought hard, but were still losing 1-0.

Both teams looked relatively alert before the second half when the referee blew his whistle to tell Patricio Camps to make the kick off. 60 minutes into the match, Omar Oruña had an open shot that he just couldn't miss and scored to the right of Nery Pumpido. U21 Guatemala's manager could be seen yelling to the referee that Omar Oruña was offside, but the referee ignored the protest. 2-0. U21 Guatemala made a substitution. Henry Benavides kicked well hit freekick during the 85th minute of the match. 86 minutes into the match, U21 Guatemala's goal looked a bit too open when Omar Oruña came free, but Nery Pumpido reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. Patricio Camps could have scored with his fast shot on goal in the 87th minute of the match, but Roris Taramona made a huge save. Henry Benavides made in the 93rd minute of the game a fairly good throw-in which was taken care of by Omar Corrales.
