In the 8th minute Vinicio Medina shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Humberto Maurits saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. Alfonso Mena kicked well hit freekick during the 11th minute of the match. In the 16th minute, Vinicio Medina made a precise shot to the right of Humberto Maurits. U21 Netherlands's defense was at fault, and the scoreboard reflected the new score, 0-2. The supporters of U21 Netherlands booed when U21 Costa Rica was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 20 match minutes in a wonderful position. Julio Cortez didn't get a good kick on the ball. After having played for 21 minutes, Alexander Driel managed to get in a good position for a shot on goal. U21 Netherlands's supporters crossed their fingers, but Alexander Driel was, after a quick turn that froze the defenders, out of balance and shot the ball just to the right of the goal. Alfonso Mejias's late challenge caught a U21 Netherlands's player on the shin and left him crawling around in pain. The referee blew his whistle and produced the yellow card. Alfonso Mejias helped the player get up and apologised. After a rather tough play, U21 Costa Rica's Alfonso Mejias got a free kick in the 25th minute. After 30 played minutes U21 Netherlands got a freekick which was hit by Johannes Tollenaar. In the 39th minute Thomas Ommen shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Bernardo Arias saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. In the 39th minute, one of U21 Costa Rica:s players had the ball in front of the goal but got pushed and fell. The referee felt it was an obvious case and blew a penalty for U21 Costa Rica. Alexander Driel shot the penalty kick by force right in the crossbar. No goal. In the 43rd minute the ball was on its way in behind U21 Netherlands's goalkeeper Humberto Maurits, but with the help of a sacrificing defense, he could catch the ball at the crossbar. Bernardo Arias stood for a superb save when he managed to get hold of Hette Reitsma's shot from short distance in the 46th minute. Luck had favoured the away team in the first, and they walked off with a 0-2 lead.

The hometeam waved at the audience when it was time for Leopoldo Kamakiri to strike the kick off in the second half. Tiro Bueno received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 52nd minute. Humberto Maurits tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. Humberto Maurits showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Leopoldo Kamakiri in the 55th minute of the match. In the 56th minute, U21 Netherlands's Joris Woering seemed to kick out at an opponent. The referee saw this and, surprisingly, showed Joris Woering the red card, dismissing him from the pitch. The coaching staff of U21 Netherlands protested bitterly, but the referee would have none of it, and Joris Woering had no choice but to slowly walk off the pitch. In the 56th minute, Joris Woering hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. U21 Netherlands made a substitution. Rogier de Kort replaced Hette Reitsma. After 58 played minutes U21 Netherlands got a freekick which was hit by Joris Woering. Leopoldo Kamakiri hit a great freekick 68 minutes into the match. When Donald Alpizar fell near the penalty area in the 73rd minute he thought he would be awarded a free kick. The referee ignored U21 Costa Rica's protests and gave Donald Alpizar a yellow card for diving instead. After 73 played minutes U21 Costa Rica got a freekick which was hit by Donald Alpizar. Bernardo Arias took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Rogier de Kort, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. Jelte Reitsma kicked well hit freekick during the 81st minute of the match. 86 minutes into the match, U21 Costa Rica's goal looked a bit too open when Jelte Reitsma came free, but Bernardo Arias reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. After 87 minutes, Leopoldo Kamakiri mouthed his way into the referee's book. The tension between the U21 Costa Rica and the U21 Netherlands players grew even worse after the yellow card. In the 87th minute, Leopoldo Kamakiri hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. The U21 Netherlands fans' excitement grew in the 90th match minute when U21 Netherlands's Rogier de Kort looked to have a clear shot with the ball near the goal. The shot wasn't hard, but the ball still rolled over the goal line to make it 1-2 before the goalkeeper had a chance to intervene.
