With an extended leg and a bit of luck Peter Gunnarsson prevented the ball from getting in the gole. Norberto Fontes came free with the goalkeeper in the 16th minute of the match, and shot straight on target. The shot was a little too simple and Peter Gunnarsson could save by the left post. The referee was alert and spotted a serious foul by Þyrnir Árnason during the 19th minute. The player immediately received a yellow card. Veigur Steingrímsson's late challenge caught a U21 Portugal's player on the shin and left him crawling around in pain. The referee blew his whistle and produced the yellow card. Veigur Steingrímsson helped the player get up and apologised. Norberto Fontes placed the ball on the penalty spot and got himself ready to shoot. Post out! The supporters of U21 Iceland booed when U21 Portugal was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 42 match minutes in a wonderful position. Xavier Bomba didn't get a good kick on the ball. Peter Gunnarsson showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Paulo Macedo in the 46th minute of the match. The score stood at 0-0 when the half time whistle went. Both sets of players seemed reasonably pleased with how the match was going.

With a couple of smart ball manuevers Diogo Meireles in the 91st managed to get into a good position. With a left leg Peter Gunnarsson saved U21 Iceland from getting behind. 94 minutes into the match, Diogo Meireles notched a goal, 4-0, to the right of U21 Iceland's Peter Gunnarsson. Peter Gunnarsson was clearly disgusted with the effort of the defense and let the defenders know about it. For all the effort they put into the match, the U21 Iceland players left disappointed. They had fought hard, but couldn't break down the home team's defense. The match ended in a win for U21 Portugal.
