Seating: 2369, VIP seats: 206) The sun was shining, the grass was green and the audience cheered when Claudio Cordero got the match started through his kick off. A collision led to Switzerland getting a freekick after 4 minutes play. Florentin Marbach hit a great ball. In the 5th minute the ball was on its way in behind Switzerland's goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon, but with the help of a sacrificing defense, he could catch the ball at the crossbar. 10 minutes into the game, Claudio Cordero recieved a splendid long ball, split the defenders, and gently placed the ball to the left of Gianluigi Buffon. Claudio Cordero showed that you don't have to tear a hole in the net to score, 1-0. Gianluigi Buffon showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Jose Mendez, who was totally free with the ball in the 14th minute. 18 minutes into the match, Costa Rica's goal looked a bit too open when Franz-Josef Honigman came free, but Herberto Obando reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. When Franz-Josef Honigman came up free with the goalie in the 21st minute, the Switzerland fans jumped to their feet. But the shot missed the goal by a fraction of an inch, and the fans sat back down disappointed that Franz-Josef Honigman couldn't finish the play. Gianluigi Buffon showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Rolando Fonseca, who was totally free with the ball in the 24th minute. Gianluigi Buffon took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Claudio Cordero, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. A hard shot 33 in the game by Pancho Campos from a close distance when the talented Gianluigi Buffon managed to make a qualified save. Switzerland's players were relieved. Costa Rica's Herberto Obando played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Joseph Gygax in the 34th minute of play. An unexpected shot in the 38th minute by Claudio Cordero got the crowd on their feet, but to their dismay it went out on the left side. Pascual Navarro kicked well hit freekick during the 42nd minute of the match. The home fans were very happy to see their team leading 1-0 at half-time.
The hometeam waved at the audience when it was time for Joseph Gygax to strike the kick off in the second half. In the 62nd minute Claudio Cordero shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Gianluigi Buffon saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. Gianluigi Buffon took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Jose Mendez, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. Costa Rica's Herberto Obando proved his good apprehension of play when he, in the 67th minute of the match, managed to save Costa Rica from getting a goal against them. 69 minutes into the game, Jose Mendez cracked a shot to the right of the goalkeeper, 2-0. Gianluigi Buffon was not in position, and could only watch the ball fly in. The supporters of Switzerland booed when Costa Rica was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 75 match minutes in a wonderful position. Bernie Rosabal didn't get a good kick on the ball. In the 76th minute of the match, Franz-Josef Honigman got a very nice opportunity to score, but Herberto Obando was well-placed and pushed the ball away from the goal at the left post. Gianluigi Buffon didn't have a chance when a screaming shot from Arsenio Paniagua went, in the 77th minute, to the upper right corner, 3-0 was the resulting score. 82 minutes into the game, Costa Rica's Jose Mendez nearly tore a hole in the net with a booming shot. Gianluigi Buffon made a valiant effort, but he could not reach the ball in time, 4-0. After a defensive mix-up in Costa Rica's zone, Arnold Bollier stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat. Herberto Obando came out of the goal and Arnold Bollier tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. Gianluigi Buffon took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Pancho Vanderlat, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. After 94 minutes, Arsenio Paniagua made it 5-0 with a short kick to the right side. Switzerland's Gianluigi Buffon tried to save the shot but he was too slow in reacting to the shot. There were very few away supporters still in the ground by the end of the match. Most of them had left early, disgusted by the way their team had been torn apart. Costa Rica fully deserved thier win.
