Hey guys, this is the Federation forum for Fans of the MLS (Major League Soccer). This is the Premier Division for teams in the United States and Canada.

Right now, we are 4 members, but looking to grow! That is the number one goal. Once we get some more members, I will open up a friendly league (paid for) and we can go from there!

This forum is for anything you want to say about the federation, but also for MLS talk. I realize there are other leagues in North America that impact MLS, so we will open up talks about these leagues as well (mainly the NASL (North American Soccer League) and USL (United Soccer Leagues) Pro leagues. These are the second and third tier of North American soccer, respectively (excluding Mexico).

Go ahead and tell us who your favorite team is and why you enjoy watching/supporting that club.

Within the next week I will post the current and future goals for the Federation (sorry, mwsomerville, but I'm stealing from your NFL forum idea!)

(Tips and ideas on how to improve the federation are greatly appreciated!)

I will start off with talking about the club I support!

I support FC Dallas, and have for many years now. I have been a season-ticket holder for 4 years now (and a partial season ticket holder for 1 year before that.) I currently live 4 hours away from the stadium, as I am in college, but I make the trip on weekends to make sure I see my club play! My parents live 1 hour away so it isn't too bad, I just stay the weekend with them.

I am extremely happy with the direction FC Dallas and MLS is moving at this time. FC Dallas has (finally!) gotten rid of there coach of the last 5 seasons, and has hired Oscar Pareja, long-time player and Assistant Coach, as the Head Coach (sorry Colorado!) It was silly not to hire Oscar as the head coach year's ago, but better late than never! FC Dallas has made it clear that they are moving in the direction of younger players, to make sure the future will be bright. We have released several older players, and only signed younger players and this will be great for the club in the future.

As for MLS as a whole, it is nice to see that they are willing to spend the big bucks on players like Dempsey, Defoe, and Bradley, but it is a bit nerve-wracking as well. All the previous leagues in USA have folded because of financial issues, and it is rumored that MLS still loses around 25 million USD a year. I think these moves will help MLS grow, but I also think it could be tough to actually make profits (or at least sustain a balanced checkbook) if they are spending freely without actually having the money to spend. I think it will all get sorted out as the league is growing and attendances are rising across the league (except for Chivas USA...)

Well, that's just my two-sense. Now it's your turn!

I guess that would make us rivals (at least in the past). I support the Chicago Fire and have been a season ticket holder since 2002 when they played at North Central College's field in suburban Naperville because Solder Field was undergoing renovations. Attended scattered games in 2000 and 2001, so unfortunately missed their most successful season when they won the League and Open Cup in 1998. Have traveled to multiple away games (mostly Kansas City and Columbus, but also Toronto and Washington, DC for league matches). Attended the Final in LA when they failed to do the treble in 2003 (Open Cup, Supporter's shield won, but lost to San Jose in Final) as well as visiting Seattle when the teams faced off in the Open Cup final a few years ago.

Back when there were 3 divisions in MLS (east, central and west) Dallas and Chicago were heated rivals frequently facing each other in the playoffs. There were multiple broken legs from matches between the clubs in those days as the games were always very physical. The supporters' groups created the Brimstone Cup to celebrate the rivalry.

We also recently parted ways with our coach Frank Klopas. He's a great person and very open with the fans in the tradition of the clubs first GM Peter Wilt (who is now working with the Indy 11). Unfortunately, the team has struggled the last few seasons on putting together a consistent string of results and has failed to perform when it really counts, leaving themselves more often than not depending on the results of other teams to decide their fate.

Interested to see how things shape up under Frank Yallop. Already many changes, so need to wait for the season to start to see if they work.

Ah a Chicago fan! Boo. The ol' Brimstone Cup is always a big thing to older FC Dallas fans. I didn't understand it in the first year or two I was a fan, but I understand the rivalry now and I love it. We had a discussion on one of the FC Dallas websites about it this season; the newer fans seemed to not care about it, but the older fans still love to hate Chicago. Fantastic rivalry to have!

Frank Yallop will be interesting at Chicago. Chicago has a decent squad, same as FC Dallas, but I think both will struggle to make the playoffs in 2014.

Also, nice to see a long-time MLS supporter. I don't see many of them in Texas... it's 99% cowboys here.

(In truth, I stole from T.A.'s MZUSA forum idea. :))

Wow. After reading, I'm ashamed of myself. I need to follow DC United more closely than I ever have been. (I've probably watched more games of Sporting Kansas City to follow Graham Zusi.) They're a local team for me, so I'm able to watch most of their games on Comcast Sports Network (CSN) when I'm in Maryland. If it means anything, I use to think of Jaime Moreno as something of legend (like Peter Bondra of the Caps, Mike Mussina of the O's, or Steve Smith of the Panthers).

On the bright side, now that I'm working, I look forward to signing up for live streaming of the 2014 season and becoming more active as a DC United fan.

mwsomerville, from what I've heard, MLS Live from mlssoccer.com has good stream quality, so that would be a good place to watch them. I usually just find another place online but the quality is garbage. I plan on buying MLS Live this coming season since FC Dallas will probably sell the TV rights to Time Warner Cable again... which no one has.

If I weren't a Chicago fan or didn't have a local team, I'd probably be a DC United fan. Always impressed with their support. Jaime Moreno is a player I have a lot of respect for, very impressive career he put together. First time I saw DC United play at RFK was actually a friendly they played against Nottingham Forest quite a while ago. Went with an ex-girlfriend's father who lives and works in DC and sat behind the Barra Brava. Very impressive and folks were pretty nice in spite of the fact that I was there in a Forest jersey.

Have a lot of friends in the DC area, so try to visit at least every few years.

Looks like the MLS is finally starting to get some traction outside of its home cities. A number of good/great players have come back in the past few years and this season seems to be continuing the trend.

Been watching how things are unfolding in the preseason and the Fire look to be contenders again. Hopefully all the changes will bring deeper runs in the Open Cup and the playoffs this year. Shame we couldn't capture Marco Pappa on his return to the league, but the price Seattle were looking for was too high.

It would have been nice to see a return of Marco Pappa to the Fire... NOT. We could have used in Dallas!

Chicago got Benji Joya though. Should be interesting to see just how good he is.

Dallas is in the UAE and smashed BK Hacken in a friendly, looking fantastic under Oscar Pareja.

Well said, T.A. Pappa was brilliant during his last stint with Fire and a pest against the USMNT. (If Seattle picked him up, I have to see who else they have. They should have a strong midfield, right?) Adding to the attraction of the MLS abroad, I heard Julio Cesar is eying Toronto FC.

I missed yesterday's preseason game; I'm watching the DC-Chicago game now.

I have no idea how Toronto can get Julio Cesar. They have 4 DPs on there roster already, and the limit is 3. Cesar would make 5.. Not gonna happen in my eyes. They already have to ship of Matias Laba (ARE YOU LISTENING DALLAS?) so I don't see them getting Cesar.

well, almost time. Not sure how I feel going into this season.

Was happy when they brought C.J.Brown back as an assistant coach. Not so keen on trading Jalili Anibaba and even less so about the recent trade of Austin Berry. I guess the on field performance will be the final decider.

Anyone else got initial feelings before the start of the season?

I have a good feeling about Dallas this year. I was freaking out a couple months ago (as were all Dallas supporters) but now it seems like we have the best roster we have ever had. Extremely young, and extremely talented. I'm glad we got Hendry Thomas, as that was the exact player we needed (Matias Laba would have used a DP spot that we ended up using.) I. Love. Oscar. Pareja.

DC United's defense is suspect; I watched the skunking. How did everyone's team fare?

One goal better than the 3-1 loss to Chivas to open last season. Didn't see a lot of improvement from last year in spite of the rebuilding under Frank Yallop. Still lacking ball control and touch. Won a lot of first balls only to give it right back. Doubt the Fire will ever dominate in the air. Bright spot Benji Hoya looked good, and Quincy looked to be picking up where he left off.

We shed a number of defenders and brought in new in order to shore up back line. I didn't see it today.

Looks like FC Dallas are doing quite well so far. Fire keep getting close. At least they've shown the resilience to fight back into a couple of games. Now all we need to do is close one out.

I have been waiting years for Schellas Hyndman to be replaced as coach and now people see why. It's not just that results are falling our way, it's the style in which the team plays. We are attacking and playing beautiful football, something that was never seen before Oscar Pareja. Mauro Diaz is a genius and Fabian Castillo is finally excelling under Oscar Pareja (who Castillo lived with when he moved to Dallas.) Perez will always be a strong finisher and Je-Vaughn Watson looks like he will be a strong contributor this year as well. That along with Chris Seitz stepping up in goal and Matt Hedges throwing his name into the USMNT pool very quickly. This is a deadly squad that teams need to watch out for. Not to mention the ridiculous amount of depth we have... We have players that don't make the bench that could start for most teams.

Meet up at Chicago Fire game details:

We are planning on attending the May 18th match. Kick off is 2 pm. Probably meet up before hand at about noon and then attend the match. Still haven't worked out all the details. Again, interested parties can contact me or nick_shopenko.

Here is the link for tickets. Corners are good views, Skyway (upper deck) is shaded, Harlem End is the supporters section. Since there is currently only a few of us attending, we probably cannot get group seats as the minimum is 15.

Meet up did not come to pass. Was only going to be Nick and myself. Then Nick got called into work. Fortunately the Fire held on for their second win of the season, so that was good.

I would like to have a match where we win solidly and don't spend the last 10 minutes worrying that somehow we will give up a tying or go ahead goal. Stoppage time seemed to last forever today. Glad that one is over.

So has your team made any player moves with the transfer window? What is your opinion of them?

I know the Fire just brought on an attacking midfielder. I will wait to pass judgement until I actually see him play as I have not read too much about him yet.

Prior to that, sent our DP forward on loan. Clearly getting the most for our money there. Too bad showed promise when he first arrived but couldn't seem to get a start this season.

With last week's draw, the Fire have tied the record for ties which they tied NYRB for two seasons ago. They have four games to go and can own the record outright with one more draw. Vancouver are on 13 with 3 games to go and are the only team with a chance of catching the Fire.

Anyone thing the Fire can pull it off? With the way they have been playing I think it's in range. A number of fans have commented that they would like to see the Fire draw the rest of their games and stand to own the record for quite a time.

MLS update - Fire finished last season with 18 draws and now own the record for draws in a season outright.

Collective Bargaining Agreement was reached yesterday so first match will be Friday night with the Fire playing reigning champions LA Galaxy. Be interesting to see if the Fire have improved with all the new talent brought in over the off season. Also interested to see LA without Landon Donovan. It's been a long winter here in Chicago, glad to see the season finally arrive. Hopefully we'll still be playing in November this year.

I don't have a favorite American team but I do support the lower leagues in hopes they will grow and knock of the MLS. The MLS is bad for soccer in the USA. The NASL has a more European style of soccer in the sense that they don't try and hold a monopoly on the rest of the soccer played in the USA. The MLS cuts out the little guys stunting grow across the board. I started my own football club "Livonia City F.C." but because of the broken system in the USA we have next to no chance to ever make it to the upper leagues in this country. The same way we look at England and see Leicester city at the top of the top flight of England stories like that can never happen in the USA. I play in the MIPSL but support the NPSL, Premier League of America, USL-PDL, and the NASL because they are helping grow soccer in the USA while the MLS is stunting its growth.

Are you a Beckham fan as well? You seem to be potentially following his trajectory head to CA and then go to FL to retire (except, I think he missed the Brazil portion of the path).

The Fire are trying to hit that 10 season out of the play offs mark. Holding up the table second year running. Hurray general allocation funds! For a team that only missed the playoffs one season in their first 10 years the Fire have really turned things around - only making the playoffs once in the last 7 years (maybe more).
